Is An Under Active Thyroid Causing These Symptoms?

Not Sure If You Have A Thyroid Problem?

Do you feel tired all the time? Have you put on weight even though you are so careful with what you eat?   Do you feel the cold more than you should? Have you started suffering constipation? Have you lost your libido, experienced changes in your menstrual cycle or become concerned about your hair and skin?

If you answer Yes to any of these questions, you might be suffering from an underactive thyroid. I say 'might' deliberately. Getting an accurate diagnosis is not easy, as these symptoms may also relate to other health issues…

You may have already have asked your GP for a thyroid function blood test to see if this is causing your symptoms. The test measures the amount of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in your blood. This is the hormone produced by the pituitary gland in your brain, ordering the thyroid gland in your neck to produce more thyroxine (T4).

The chances are the results will say that you are in the 'normal' range. What is normal? It varies from one health authority to another, but is usually between 0.35 mu/l and 5.50 mu/l. The higher the number, the more likely your thyroid is under functioning. If the amount of TSH is relatively high and the amount of T4 rather low, this suggests that your thyroid might be working very hard to produce 'just enough' thyroxine. So even if both figures are in the 'normal' range, it is clearly worth looking at in more detail to see why your TSH/T4 ratio is raised.

Thyroxine Is Of Little Use To Your Body Unless It Gets Converted To T3

Even if your TSH level is normal, that does not mean everything is hunky dory. The main benefit of T4 comes when it is converted is to the active thyroid hormone T3 and then transported to your cell membranes. It is T3 that gives you energy and helps almost every one of your bodily functions to work properly. What the doctor gives you is thyroxine, T4. But if you can't convert it to T3, your symptoms may not improve.

There may be a number of reasons why your blood tests are ‘normal’  or why T4 medication is not alleviating your symptoms:

  • What is considered ‘normal’ may not be normal for you particularly if the ratio of TSH to T4 is raised
  • You may be lacking the nutrients required for the conversion of T4 to T3
  • Due to the conditions in your body (stress, heavy metals for example) you may be converting T4 to an inactive form of T3 known as RT3, or Reverse T3
  • You may be suffering from high levels of stress which may be preventing T3 being transported into the cell membranes

These are just a few of the more common reasons why you might be suffering with your symptoms.  We have designed our Thyroid Diagnostic Clinic to help people just like you.

Barbara Powell - Your Thyroid Expert

Like many of our patients, you may feel that you have exhausted NHS resources in order to understand your problems but you are no further forward.  We fully understand - your symptoms are real to us.

Could 90 Minutes 1:1 With a Thyroid Expert Help You Feel Better?

The answer is that you need time with an expert to discuss your symptoms in detail. Your GP has about 9 minutes to deal with you and move on to the next patient. In our clinic, you will spend 90 minutes with a degree qualified nutritional therapist.

And not just any nutritional therapist. Barbara Powell BSc (Hons) Nutritional Therapy Dip CNE MBANT has a deep personal knowledge of underactive thyroid. Why? For ten long years she suffered from a number of these symptoms and after many invasive tests was simply diagnosed as having a ‘sluggish’ bowel.  Eventually, and after her thyroid gland had completely packed up, she was fortunate enough to came across a brilliant GP who looked at her symptoms holistically and was finally able to give her a diagnosis.

That experience, combined with her subsequent training in Nutritional Therapy, has given her a deep and personal knowledge of the symptoms. For the last sixteen years, Barbara has used a combination of medication and her own nutritional expertise to manage her condition.

As well as her main degree, Barbara holds Diplomas in Anatomy & Physiology and Certificates in Dietary Counselling and Biochemistry.

Barbara has developed an exclusive questionnaire to drive the Thyroid Diagnostic Clinic. When you call 0845 130 7832 to request a registration pack, you will be sent this questionnaire by return. You complete it and return it to us so that Barbara can analyse it before you even get together. This means that every one of the 90 minutes you spend together is used to understand your symptoms better and come up with the right plan of action to set you on the road to feeling well again.

A Personal Action Plan To Put You On The Road To  Wellbeing

By the time you finish your consultation, your Personal Action Plan will be in place. Usually there are three parts to this:

  • Changes to what you eat based on a discussion of your diet
  • Supplements to to help alleviate symptoms and accelerate the repair of the body
  • Recommendations for saliva, urine, stool or blood tests to investigate your symptoms more deeply if necessary

Your plan is discussed and agreed with you in order to take into account any lifestyle and financial considerations. Follow up sessions of 45 - 60 mins are usually recommended after 4 - 6 weeks.

Your Thyroid May Not Be The Cause Of Your Symptoms

Don't be surprised if Barbara advises you that your thyroid is not the real cause of your symptoms. About 50% of the patients who attend the Thyroid Diagnostic Clinic find that the real culprit is elsewhere in their endocrine system. The endocrine system extends from your brain (pineal gland, hypothalamus and pituitary gland) through your neck (thyroid) to your stomach area (adrenal glands and pancreas) to your reproductive bits (ovaries or testes).

See why you need Barbara's help? Think of her as your Private Investigator, seeking out the root cause of your symptoms before guiding you on the path to recovery.

We know from the thousands of people who visit our web site and complete one of our surveys that many of you are looking for help in diagnosing the cause of your symptoms. To make the Thyroid Diagnostic Clinic available to as many of you as possible, we have kept the price down to just £119. This includes a follow-up phone call a few days after your consultation just to make sure that you have understood the main findings and are clear on what to do next. I hope you agree that access to an expert for ten times the length of a typical GP appointment is well worth such a modest investment.
