Here's How Our Unique Clinic Can Help You Get The Skin You Want...
According to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Skin, 33% of us suffer with a skin condition at some point in our lives. Despite the scale of the problem, NHS waiting lists for dermatology are the highest in the country.A skin disorder can occur anywhere on your body, and its severity can range from irritating to life-threatening. Skin is an organ – the largest in the body and it has many uses: it protects us from invading pathogens, helps regulate our temperature, produces Vitamin D and melanin and provides an excretory route for toxins….to name a few. We understand how distressing a skin problem can be and our aim is to find the root cause of the problem. Much can be done to improve your skin health by providing the necessary nutrients your skin needs to function properly. But we also need to investigate and treat any potential underlying cause of your skin problem. We call this 'Nutritional Intervention' and experience suggests that it can produce great results for most skin disorders including: ♦Acne ♦ Ageing ♦ Cold Sores ♦ Corns and Calluses ♦ Dry skin ♦ Eczema (or dermatitis) ♦ Psoriasis ♦ Rosacea ♦ Sunburn ♦ Verucas ♦ Warts New Report On The 7 Secrets Of Eating For Perfect Skin!Fiona Pike, who heads up our unique Skin Clinic, has written a new report explaining the top 7 nutrition secrets for perfect skin. Case Study - PsoriasisMs D came to the clinic suffering from chronic psoriasis. The psoriasis was localised and patchy but was especially aggressive around the head and ear area. It was becoming socially embarrassing for Ms D as her occupation as a trainee teacher meant she was in constant close proximity to her pupils. "She Felt Uncomfortable Shedding Skin Constantly"She felt uncomfortable with the skin shedding constantly on her clothes. She wanted an aggressive approach that would provide immediate results as she didn’t want the additional stress of being self-conscious about her skin. She had been prescribed dovonex cream and arcoxia tablets (NSAID) by her doctor but didn’t want to use them any longer as she was worried about their long-term effects. After doing a full assessment of her health and lifestyle it was decided that initially we would work on cleansing the bowel with the aim of taking some stress off the liver. Ms D had noticed that her symptoms worsened with alcohol, which indicated that the liver may be under intense stress and psoriasis is often linked to the build-up of toxins in the colon. For the next three weeks D followed a programme which I designed for her: Eating PlanWe worked on practical ways getting 10 portions of fruit and veg into her diet on a daily basis. This would allow us to obtain high levels of antioxidants and fibre, essential for cleansing the bowel. The increased intake of fruit and vegetables also allowed Ms D to obtain the vital amounts of Vitamin A, zinc, Vitamin E and B vitamins which are essential for skin health and blood sugar balance. The liver plays a central role in managing our blood sugar, so easing the stress that we had identified would be a step towards improved skin. I provided D with snack ideas, recipes, and smoothie suggestions to help achieve this. I asked Ms D to avoid citrus fruits as she was eating lots of oranges and sometimes this can aggravate certain skin conditions. Refined foods were swapped with their whole alternative as the refined versions encourage toxin production and are devoid of nutrients and fibre. I also suggested that dairy products and red meat should be avoided until the next session due to their inflammatory effect. I also asked D to avoid alcohol as it depletes the body of essential nutrients and puts additional strain on the liver. SupplementsI recommended that Ms D take a high potency antioxidant, a broad-spectrum multivitamin and some Jointguard (a source of omega 3’s for its anti-inflammatory effect which is paired with Glucosamine which was ideal as D was also suffering with some psoriatic arthritis in her toe). She had already decided to stop using her prescribed cream and anti-inflammatory but I ensured that she checked with her doctor before doing so. LifestyleI suggested that D may want to swap her liquid detergent to Ecover; it contains less synthetic chemicals and wouldn’t leave as much chemical residue. I asked her to wear only cotton next to the affected areas and to try Calendula cream which is soothing for dry, irritated, flaky skin. At D’s next visit there was obvious improvement but symptoms were still obvious. Psoriasis cannot be ‘cured’ but symptoms can certainly be kept under control so that they are almost negligible. Frequently if the colon is toxic it has been damaged and there may be several intolerances so we agreed to eliminate gluten from the diet for the next 4 weeks. We added milk thistle as a supplement to aid the liver’s detoxifying capacity and some L.acidophilus to re-inoculate the gut. "At D's Third Appointment She Looked Amazing"At D’s third appointment she was looking amazing. The large area of scaly redness on her forehead was completely smooth and the psoriasis was almost invisible. I advised that she stick to the elimination of the dairy and gluten for another 4 weeks while also recommending some sensible sun exposure and having some Epsom salt baths. D is now able to keep her psoriasis under control via her diet and by keeping stress levels under control. Times of stress inevitably aggravate the condition so D tries extra hard during these times to do some yoga and light exercise.
Testimonial From Ms D"I came to see Fiona about my psoriasis. I had had psoriasis since 2005 and it was getting worse the older I got. I had used various steroid creams and each would work for a short period of time and then the psorasis would get worse again. I also knew that steroids would damage my skin in the long term so stopped using then. I wasn't sure whether nutrition could help but I was at the point where I was willing to try anything. I went to see Fiona three times and I was amazed and delighted at the results I got over a relatively short amount of time. My psoriasis went from being a constant unpleasant eyesore to barely visible and easy to control. It gave me renewed confidence and allowed me to function without having to constantly worry about my appearance. Fiona was reassuring and approachable which made our sessions enjoyable – I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her to anyone." Ms D, London
