Whether It's Weight Loss, Food Cravings, Stress Or Anxiety, Joseph Can Help You...

At National Nutrition Clinic we aim to provide you with all the help you need to achieve your wellbeing objectives.

Usually we achieve this through a combination of screening and nutritional therapy consultations, but sometimes we also look at behavioural change through hypnotherapy. We have seen life-changing results from patients who have used this service, in areas as diverse as losing weight, overcoming food cravings, stopping smoking and overcoming stress.

Joseph Kao uses a variety of therapies and treatment methods under the umbrella name of Human Givens to get you to where you want to be as quickly and easily as possible.

Typically it will require two or three 75 minute sessions to address a given need.

What is Human Givens Psychotherapy?

The Human Givens approach began 15 years ago when a group of psychologists and therapists examined all modern forms of psychotherapy and they collected together the approaches that actually worked, that were supported by clinical research and modern neurology, and they discarded the approaches that had no evidence to support them.

They found that the clichéd image of psychotherapy, made famous by Woody Allen, where patients discuss their childhoods with an analyst for twenty years, does not tend to produce useful results at all. However, when certain approaches like solution-focused therapy, cognitive therapy, and guided imagery are combined, patients can make profound changes in their thinking patterns, their emotions and their behaviour, typically within a small number of sessions.

At its heart, the Human Givens proposes that like any organism, humans have a series of basic needs: good nutrition, physical safety and rest, to give and receive attention, intimacy, creative stimulation, a connection to a community and so on. The more we can meet these needs, the more we will be psychologically and physically healthy. If we are failing to meet many of these needs, we become much more prone to problems like anxiety and depression, and to engaging in short-term solutions to feel better like comfort eating and alcohol abuse.

The Human Givens approach also proposes that we are all born with a variety of innate resources to help us meet our basic needs. These include things like an ability to update our instinctive learnings, to think creatively and use our imagination, to think objectively and rationally, to empathise and connect with others and so on. Human Givens therapy is about learning to utilise all your innate resources to more effectively meet your basic needs.

What is a Human Givens Therapy Session Like?

In the session, Joseph will work with you to explore the patterns in your life that are causing you stress or that are interfering with your nutrition plan. Sometimes this can involve examining how your day to day habits are contributing to the problem, but more often than not there are also thinking patterns and unhelpful emotional responses behind the issue.

Joseph will ask you a series of questions inviting you to consider new perspectives, he will lead you through some specific mental exercises to rapidly change unhelpful thoughts and emotions, and he will offer you some powerful relaxation exercises that you can use to feel calmer when you need to.

After a small number of sessions, people typically find they are instinctively becoming calmer and naturally drawn to making healthier choices in what they eat and how they exercise.

You Can Be Helped...

As long as you are willing, with the right assistance, you can be helped to overcome your challenge. No blinding jargon (or 'psychobabble') is used at the hypnotherapy clinic, what you can expect is a friendly, reassuring manner to put you at your ease and the expertise to help you with your problem.

'I Haven't Touched Peanut Butter on Toast Since!'

"Joseph has changed my life around! When I first went to see him I was coming out of a difficult relationship and I felt as if I was losing control of things and was reacting to all of this by comfort eating which wasn't making me feel any better. Joseph listened and showed me techniques I could use every day to make me feel better. I've used these techniques for all sorts of situations and feel as if I've totally got my life back under control. I also haven't touched peanut butter on toast since! Joseph is fantastic at showing you your problem from a different angle you hadn't even considered before. He completely refocuses you and I left feeling so much better." G. Gillies – East London

'I Feel Confident That I Can Now Handle Anything That Work Throws At Me...'

"I went to see Joseph for help in adjusting with my new job which I found incredibly stressful and I was finding it very hard to cope and get my work/life balance right, I was having anxiety attacks and felt tense and wound up all the time. Joseph made me feel completely at ease and I had no problem in talking things through with him. By the end of the three sessions, not only did I feel completely ready to go to work with a new and fresh attitude but now, months later I feel confident that I can handle anything that work throws at me. It's also such a thoroughly enjoyable experience, being able to take time out to relax and really think things through with such an understanding, friendly person. I wouldn't hesitate to go back."  R. Harris – Muswell Hill

Scientific Proof Of How Hypnotherapy Can Help You Lose More Weight AND Keep It Off Long Term

There is a significant body of scientific evidence to support the contribution made by hypnotherapy to long term weight loss. Here are just three examples, showing that groups of patients who underwent hypnosis as part of their weight loss programme were able to lose between 2 and 3 times as much weight as those who had no hypnotherapy, and were more successful in maintaining and increasing weight loss over time :

1. Journal of Clinical Psychology, 41 (1), 35-41:

109 people aged 17-67 year olds completed a behavioural treatment for weight management either with or without the addition of hypnosis. Results show that at the end of the 9-week program, both interventions resulted in significant weight reduction. However, at 8-month and 2-year follow up, the hypnosis subjects showed significant additional weight loss, while those in the behavioural treatment only group exhibited little further change. More subjects who used hypnosis also achieved and maintained their personal weight goals.

Cochrane, Gordon; Friesen,J. (1986) Hypnotherapy in weight loss treatment.

2. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 64 (3), 517-519.

Averaged across post treatment and follow-up assessment periods, the mean weight loss was 6.00 lbs. (2.72 kg) without hypnosis and 11.83 lbs. (5.37 kg) with hypnosis. At the last assessment period, the mean weight loss was 6.03 lbs. (2.74 kg) without hypnosis and 14.88 lbs. (6.75 kg) with hypnosis. Correlational analyses indicated that the benefits of hypnosis increased substantially over time.

3. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. Volume: 54 489-492

Investigated the effects of hypnosis in weight loss for 60 females, at least 20% overweight and not involved in other treatment....hypnosis was more effective than a control group (17 vs. 5 pounds on follow-up).
