12 Little Known Secrets About Food Intolerance

1.      Consistent reactions to commercial ice-creams, but not to milk, cream or homemade ice-cream, may indicate an allergy to polysorbates used as stabilizers during ice-cream manufacture.

2.      Lamb, rice and pears are the foods least likely to cause a reaction.

3.      Up to 25% of aspirin-sensitive individuals also react adversely to the azo dye tartrazine (E102), the yellow colouring widely used in many foods such as flavoured crisps, soft drinks and confectionery.

4.      Wheat can be difficult to totally eliminate because it can be hidden in a wide range of foods, such as sausages (rusk bulking agent), soy sauce, stock cubes, even toothpaste and baking powder, as well as the more obvious cakes, biscuits and breads!

5.      Tamari sauce is a wheat-free soy sauce, originating from Japan.

6.      Alternatives to wheat-based pasta include: rice and corn or rice and millet pasta, buckwheat noodles or buckwheat or spelt spaghetti (spelt is an ancient variety of wheat that has less gluten and may be better tolerated.)

7.      Conditions most often affected by food intolerance are Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), eczema, migraine, rheumatoid arthritis and serous otitis media (glue ear).

8.      Intolerance is usually to foods that are eaten on a regular basis so try to eat a varied diet and rotate foods, e.g., don’t have the same breakfast cereal every morning.

9.      People with mild to moderate intolerance to lactose (milk sugar in animal milks) may be able to tolerate sheep’s or goat’s milk products as the protein structures are easier to digest.

10.  High levels of the naturally-occurring chemical histamine in red wine, champagne, mackerel and tuna, and some cheeses (cheddar, emmental and camembert) can cause diarrhoea, flushing, nausea and headaches.

11. Bacterial and viral infections and certain medications can trigger food intolerance.

12.  About 20% of people of northern European origin have lactose intolerance.

Do You Really Know Which Foods Can Make You Ill?

71% Of Us Are Food Intolerant. Are You One Of Them?

We recently surveyed 500 of our patients and found that a staggering 71% were intolerant to at least one food. 48% were lacking in at least one key vitamin or nutrient. How can you tell if you are in the 71%?

  • Do you feel poorly after eating a meal?
  • Do certain foods give you a bloated stomach?
  • Do you feel tired at certain times of the day?
  • Do you suffer headaches for no apparent reason?
  • Do you suffer the agony of irritable bowel syndrome, with a constant swing between constipation and diarrhoea?

These are all symptoms of food intolerance, where the culprit food is not properly absorbed and passes into your blood stream. Your immune system reacts to partially digested food and causes the symptoms of intolerance to occur.

What Happens During A Food Intolerance Screening?

A forty-five minute screening at our clinic can show you whether you are intolerant to any of 222 types of food. We don't take blood, you get immediate results and the cost is about one third of a blood test. Is it accurate? Our highly trained Nutritional Consultants think so - they use the screening as an important input to patient consultations.

"I was feeling bloated and lethargic and thought it might be because of food intolerance. The people at National Nutrition Clinic were professional and approachable. The screening was affordable and has solved my problem. I now have loads of confidence, energy amd a clear head. Give it a go - it's worth it!"          Su Humphris, Swanley

You must have watched endless TV programmes and read dozens of articles saying what you should or should not eat, drink, or take as a supplement. Have you found that the information is often contradictory?

Have you noticed how the advice works perfectly for some people, but for others, including yourself, there's something not quite right that you just can't put your finger on? That's because your body is different to everyone else's. What is right for them might be quite unsuitable for you.

Your Body Is Unique So You Need A Personalised Screening

An accurate health programme can only be put in place after an individual assessment. The old adage, "you are what you eat," could easily be translated into; "you are what you absorb." The only way to find out exactly what your body is absorbing is through accurate screening techniques.

At our Richmond and Victoria clinics we use the latest technology from the US to screen you for food intolerance, vitamin and mineral deficiency. The system has the ability to quickly and accurately screen you for sensitivities to 222 foods  and food ingredients and find any imbalances in 85 vitamins, minerals and nutrients.

You may find, for example, that you have an intolerance to dairy foods, or to yeast or wheat. Unlike allergies, which stay with you for life, food intolerances can be 'cured' in a relatively short time by taking the right steps. Depending on what we find during the screening, we may refer you to one of our Nutritional Therapists for a 1:1 consultation. Or, we may suggest that you take some supplements to help your digestion.

'It was a simple, painless and effective test which confirmed the sources of my problems. I can now, with the advice of the clinic, remove or substitute the foods from my diet that have caused bad skin, constipation, bloating and mood swings that have haunted me for years'   Suzie Watson, N London

Our screenings are non-invasive and are carried out by sending a signal representing the profile of each food type to the cynlidrical electrode that you hold in each hand then measuring how your body reacts.

You Receive Immediate Results At The End Of The Screening

You receive a printout of your results at the end of the screening, which illustrates the balanced and sensitive foods, and the nutrient status of your body. This can provide good foundation data for re-balancing your health, and is often used as the starting point for a detailed review with one of our Nutritional Therapists.

Please remember - the screening is a great way to see at a glance if you have any intolerances, but it is not a subsitute for a detailed consultation with a nutritional therapist. If you have specific problems you may be better served by seeing the nutritional therapist first then seeing if she recommends a screening as part of your programme.

"After my girlfriend found you on the internet, I came along to eliminate any doubt about whether I was suffering any food intolerances. The screening showed that I was clear of intolerance to over 100 types of food"       Jeff Hardie NW London

"I would thoroughly recommend anyone to do this, knowing what foods you are intolerant to and amending your diet around them is a simple thing to do to improve your overall well-being."                   Joanna Cumming, London NW2

PLEASE NOTE: If you are pregnant, or you have a pace-maker fitted, we regret that we are not able to screen you. Some medications may also prevent us from achieving the readings we need to provide an accurate result.

What Happens After My Screening?

If everything is clear there is no action to take, though we recommend that you are screened every three to six months as food intolerances change over time.

If a potential problem with your nutrition is identified we recommend a 90 minute Nutrition Consultation. The normal fee for this is £119, but as a screening patient you will receive a special discounted fee of £109.
